On Love and Litter

My family leaves shit everywhere and it drives me a little nuts.... But, I choose not to make a scene about it. Why? Because, to be in any relationship, we often need to accept and navigate around each others foibles. Compulsions , such as telling ourselves we JUST CAN'T sit and watch tv if there is clutter on the table or dishes in the sink, keep us preoccupied and then we blame others for our agitation. On the spiritual path, we don't ask the world to change for us, we reflect on our own attachments. When there's love and connection, that heap of papers left on the table is just a pile of pulp. Yes, it's irritating but not a cause for battle. At the end of our lives, the little things will seem so unimportant compared with how well we have loved, laughed, and treated ourselves and loved ones.

This post was inspired by one of my favorite books! If the Buddha Married: Creating Enduring Relationships on a Spiritual Path (Compass)
